As most of you have heard last night, 3/10/2010, Mike Buchanan(Bucky) died doing what he loved. He was on a hike with a dear friend and died while hiking on trail. Mike was a lover of many things, first his family, friends and then the outdoors. We feel Blessed that our husband, father, grandpa, son and brother died quickly and pain free. He died breathing in the sweet air of the Mountain. He lived his life to the fullest with no regrets. He did more in his short life than most of us will do in a life time.
We are working as a family to find the best way of honor Mike's life. We will be doing a celebration of life service within the next week. Details are still vague as for the cause of death.
The point of the blog is not only to honor our husband, father and grandpa but it is to communicate with you all. We are asking all of you to post comments, memories and/or pictures.
The Bucky legacy must live on. Not only through his wife, children, grandchildren and family but through all of you as well.

LIFE IS GOOD!!!
ReplyDeleteShortly after Roger was diagnosed, he received an e-mail from Mike (Buck)saying he wanted to come to Bend for a visit. He did and brought along another old friend B2 (Bert Brown). For several days I got to witness the three of them reminisce about their days in ESAR and Post 515 where the three of them met. They spent many weekends together in the late 60's and early 70's trekking throughout the Cascades and Olympics. Even with his heart disease, Buck inspired Roger by his vitality, his passion for life. He wore a t-shirt that said "Life is Good". I am certain that Buck's enthusiasm was a source of strength for Roger until the end.
I am certain that if Roger were still with us, he would have been one of the first there for Buck's family. Please know that you are all now and will continue to be in my prayers for your comfort and peace through what, I am certain, will be a very trying time.
Here's to a remarkable, inspiring and truly precious human being.

I have known Mike for more than a decade. I first knew him as the Soccer Coach at the other end of the field and he was crazy fun, He coached some boys and I had a group of awesome girls, that could not beat those younger boys, maybe once but i do not think that Brian was there that day (smiling) or maybe we beat them a lot hehehehehehe Brian and Niea probably remember those statistics better than me. We practiced at Liberty Ridge for a few years at the same time, and at the end of practice they would drive away in the "Babe Mobile" an old red subuaru station wagon no less. Life was great in those days. And now it is better, well up till Tuesday, but Mikes attitude for the good life will be with all of us till our day comes.
ReplyDeleteThan one day My wonderful loving son comes home all excited because he had a Date with a girl named Cindy, so of course I was asking all the normal Mom questions, he was not sure of her last name but he thought it was Buchanan, I said does her Dad coach soccer and he thought that he did - - well we know the rest of the story (I am sitting her wondering what kind of questions Mike was thinking of to ask Rex when he picked Cindy up for the first date, I would like to hear about that some day from Rex, never gave it much thought till right now, i mean who would be worried about there daughter going out with my Son, I guess no other Dad ever had to worry about that now did they, he must have answered the questions correctly lol) any way I am grateful for Mike and Judy both and especially for making such a beautiful daughter that has been a blessing to me and wonderful daughter in law and wife. I am grateful for all the good times that we have had and closeness that we have as a family. We have worked together and gotten each through different things during life. Right now you are all going through (and so am I) the most devasting part of life. Be strong as Mike would want us to be, Be true to your hearts and hold special to your hearts that is shared easily amongst all, that is what Mike would want, so I think that anyway. My love goes out to everyone and I can not wait to be near you
I got to know Mike back in 1992 when we moved to Bonney Lake. The Buchanan’s were great neighbors and Mike and I hit it off from the beginning. Who could not get along with the big smile and great attitude? Mike encouraged me to start road riding (bicycle) and that 15 miles in nothing. One of the first rides with Mike we rode out about 10 mile stopped and bought moca’s and donuts then rode back, I thought I might die. We did many more rides then he talked me into doing the STP, 200 mile is two days. I thought he was crazy but my pride would not let me back out. If he could do it I could. Well we made it; although there were many times I didn’t think I would. I never would have thought about doing something like that without Mike. We continued to do this for several years until we moved away.
ReplyDeleteJudy, Julie, Cindy and Brian our hearts are breaking for you. He was a great man, neighbor and friend to all. You are in our prayers.
